While We’re Young
By: K.L. Walther
Official Synopsis:
Grace, Isa, and Everett used to be an inseparable trio before their love lives became a tangled mess. For starters, Grace is secretly in love with Everett, who used to go out with Isa before breaking her heart in the infamous Freshman Year Fracture. And, oh yeah, no one knows that Isa has been hanging out with James, Grace’s brother—and if Grace finds out, it could ruin their friendship.
With graduation fast approaching, Grace decides an unsanctioned senior skip day in Philadelphia might be just what they need to fix things. All she has to do is convince Isa to help her kidnap Everett and outmaneuver James, who’s certain his sister is up to something.
In an epic day that includes racing up the famous Rocky steps, taste-testing Philly's finest cheesesteaks, and even crashing a wedding, their secrets are bound to collide. But can their hearts withstand the wreckage?
My Review:
While We’re Young by K.L. Walther is a delightful tale combining Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a story of reconnecting with old friends. This book follows Grace, Isa, and Everett, who all used to be close friends before love got in the way of things. Secretly, Grace is in love with Everett, who used to date Isa before their horrific break up, and Isa has become close with James, Grace’s twin brother. With their last high school days fast approaching, Grace decides that they all need a day off. She drags Isa and Everett to a skip day in Philadelphia, where they taste test Philly’s finest cheesesteaks, race up the Rocky steps, visit museums, and more! Meanwhile, they have to face their secrets for the first time in years.
I loved The Summer of Broken Secrets, another book by K.L. Walther, so I had high expectations for this one. This book was a fast paced read and I finished it in only a day. The book has four different perspectives, so it was nice to see what everyone was thinking and how things played out in everyone’s mind. I loved watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and this book reminded me so much of it. Through faking being sick and sneaking friends out of school, they both had amazing and similar storytelling.
While I enjoyed many aspects of this book, I found that there were some things that bothered me while I read. Throughout the story, the author sprinkled in flashbacks; however, it was confusing to determine whether it was a flashback or not. Also, the ending of the book felt abrupt and I felt some characters' stories were not finished.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and the storytelling. The author achieved exactly what she wanted with the book. I would rate this book a three out of five stars.
